Sports

Sports is a short shelf, 32 stories. The Light covered Bulldogs athletics through season previews, the Orange and White flag football game against Notre Dame Academy and the student section in the stands, but much of the best sports writing looks outward.

In 2014 the staff profiled a junior soccer player, M.A. Vignola, who went on to play for Tennessee, in the NWSL and for the U.S. national team; Wikipedia cites the profile. The Sochi Olympics in February 2014 produced a story on Sarah Burke, the Canadian freeskier who pushed for halfpipe skiing to become an Olympic event. Cincinnati teams show up when the mood of the city changed. The 31-Year Curse marks the Bengals' first playoff win since 1991, and two stories from early 2023 deal with Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest at Paycor Stadium, including what SUA's athletic trainer has in place for an emergency at a game. The longest piece in the section is a 2,200-word review of March Madness 2023.
